Violent crime is increasing in Alberta. You can find the statistics here.

We are thankful to the thousands of victims who turn to victim advocates every year.

In the last 20 years of data reporting (here), violent crime in our province increased by 40%. In just the last 10 years, the number of violent crimes reported in our province increased by more than 15%.

For the same reporting period, but looking at all crimes (here), the total number of crimes increased by nearly 52%. In the last 10 years, the total number of reported crimes increased by almost 29%.

In the last 10 years, the population of Alberta has increased by less than 17% (stats here).

Victim serving organizations have adapted and made necessary changes to be able to continue meeting the needs of everyone who needs them, but you have to wonder – has support for these organizations continued at the same pace as the growth in demand?

It hasn’t.

And now, changes to the Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act could change the amount of support these organizations receive. They need your support.
